The Maritime Industry in India has made tremendous progress during the past decades. Indian government's ambitious National Maritime Development Programme (NMDP), which was flagged off in August 2005, has been able to make substantial benefits to the port sector in the country. According to data compiled by Indian Port Association (IPA), the august umbrella body of 12 major ports, 38 out of 276 port projects envisaged in NMDP stand completed. Cumulatively, the projects have added 54.60 million tonne additional capacity to as many as six ports.
