> The costs and benefits for shippers from reducing ships' fuel emissions
The shipping sector is being forced to reduce its emissions of green house gasses and particulates. But this brings with it both the danger of increased costs and a threat to the viability of many services. Will shippers see any benefits or just costs and problems? If there are benefits to be gained from reduced emissions, will shippers see any of them?
This session will cover issues surrounding the use of bigger ships, slow steaming, alternative fuels, new ship design and technologies, possible emissions trading and fuel/emission levies on the industry and shippers.

> Emission Control Areas (ECA's) and the impact on short sea shipping and the manufacturing industry
NOx and SOx limits in ECAs, due to be enforced in 2015, will force shipowners to either switch to ultra-low-sulphur fuel, install scrubbers, or convert to LNG fuel. The fourth alternative would be to cease operating in the English Channel, North Sea and Baltic. The impact on industry in Europe could be severe: will some industries in the north of Europe become less competitive because of the increase in the costs of transport; and will industry need to re-locate or dramatically alter their supply-lines to survive?

> Models for calculating Carbon Footprint and tools for co-operation
A number of tools and schemes are being developed for green supply chain management. Do schemes which advocate best practice to reduce the environmental impact of supply chains actually yield real business benefits? How do shippers know what the cost benefits will be from the various green initiatives, and how do you perform an accurate cost benefit analysis?
Some of the tools used and being developed to measure environmental performance will be scrutinised, as we also ask if any of these truly work and which will become industry standards.

> Best Practices: Sustainable Logistics Chains in Operation
All talk or do they really work? This session examines a number of 'green' supply chain strategies to see if they go beyond the hype and really deliver some meaningful benefits and bottom line results for shippers engaged in door-to-door maritime supply chains.
Speakers will compare their experiences of efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of freight transport in different modes and sectors of the economy; and examine if it really does benefit the bottom line of a company's accounts.

> Reducing shortages, costs and environmental impacts from better management of container supply
Shippers have been plagued by container equipment supply shortages in recent peak shipping periods; but an old idea is being re-examined which has the potential to deliver greater hinterland transport efficiencies, lower emissions and reduce seasonal equipment shortages. Is the 'Grey Box' concept becoming the "Green Box" concept? Are carriers and container lessors ready to support and implement large-scale, pan-industry container interchange programmes? Are there other models in the market?

SHIPPER FORUM 2011
Greening the Maritime Logistics Supply Chain, challenges and opportunities
28th September 2011, 09.00 - 17.45 hrs
Stanhope Hotel
, Brussels
€ 200, including networking lunch
Who should attend:
Shippers from all over Europe and anyone involved in the maritime transport industry
Not just a conference
Greening the Maritime Logistics Supply Chain – challenges and opportunities is not just any environmentally-themed transport conference: it is critical for those shippers who must do what they can to know the consequences on them and their supply chains from new and developing measures to reduce emissions from shipping. It is vital for those who need to know which are the internationally recognised measures of environmental performance, and carbon footprints in maritime supply chains. It is a matter of competitive advantage for those looking for best practices which deliver bottom-line savings and corporate environmental policy in parallel.
This is an environmental conference you cannot afford to miss. Brought to you by those who know shippers, speak for shippers and have shippers’ interests at the heart of everything they do: the European Shippers’ Council, in cooperation with SITL, DVV Media Group, Nieuwsblad Transport and De Lloyd.
